My research group focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular emergencies including acute myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndrome and congestive heart failure. We have evaluated novel cardiac markers and point-of-care testing in clinical practice. Current projects also include the diagnosis and treatment of acute pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis. Other interests include spinal cord injury, pneumonia and sepsis.

Primary and secondary prevention of disease through the use of preventive genomic medicine. Patients who have greater insight into their genetic risk for different diseases may change their lifestyles and decrease their probablity of succumbing to conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular events. Personalized screening regimens for those at increased genetic risk, such as for colon cancer, is another important application worthy of validation.

My research interests are focused on minimizing the impact of breast cancer from a diagnostic and therapuetic standpoint. Breast MRI is a powerful tool to facilitate the screening for and staging of breast cancer, and can be valuable adjunct to guide breast surgery. Oncoplastic surgical techniques optimize cosmesis after breast cancer surgery. Accelerated radiotherapy after lumpectomy decreases radiotherapy treatment times from 6 weeks to just 1 to 5 days.

Application of Micro/Nanotechnology to Biological Systems.

Dr. Jeffrey was team leader of the multidisciplinary team from the School of Medicine, School of Engineering, and Genome Technology Center that invented the MagSweeper automated technology to isolate live circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from cancer patient blood for single cell analysis. Her lab characterizes CTCs in different cancers, investigating CTC profiles and mutations as potential companion diagnostics to define individual patient response to newer biologically-based cancer therapies.

My personal mission is to contribute to the overall care of the surgical patient. My research interests, as they pertain to this mission, are childhood obesity prevention, the surgical management of obesity, minimal access surgical techniques, evidenced based surgery, surgical skills acquisition, and surgical education.

My main research interests include the surgical management of the morbidly obese, evidence-based surgery, and surgical education. Prior training in public health, health administration, and surgery provide a strong foundation from which to pursue these goals. The only effective and enduring treatment for morbid obesity is bariatric surgery. Like the previous public health epidemics of cancer and heart disease, surgery is the first responder to the obesity crisis.

Interleukin-12 is a Th1 cytokine. It is important in the cell mediated immune response. We are investigating its role as an anti-tumor cytokine to augment the immune response against cancer. We are planning a human trial.

Through a 3 pronged comprehensive program: translational and clinical research, early detection and treatment, and promoting education, awareness and immunization, we are working towards the development of new strategies that will lead to the elimination of hepatitis B worldwide and reduce the threat and incidence of liver cancer. Our current research efforts focus on evaluating potential new diagnostic and treatment markers and novel targeted therapy for primary liver cancer.

Our main areas of interest have been shock, sepsis, multiple organ faliure and ICU pneumonia.

My research interests span the breath of my clinical practice. Areas of active research include the multidisciplinary treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, technical aspects of minimally invasive pancreatic and liver surgery, and pre-operative therapy for "borderline" resectable pancreatic cancer (to bring more patients to surgery). I am also investigating trends in the management of hepatobiliary cancers in California, focusing on socioeconomic and instituional barriers to appropriate care.

Clinical treatment trials in Breast Cancer, especially local recurrence of breast cancer. Dr. Wapnir is institutional Principal Investigator for National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP). Laboratory research includes exploring the activity of breast iodide transporter in breast cancer. These endeavors have lead to translational research protocols.

Clinical research focused on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of anal cancer and its precursor lesions. Clinical trials of ablative therapy for High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (HSIL) of the anus and perianal tissues as a means for preventing anal cancer. Basic science work in collaboration with Ronald Davis and Hanlee Ji focused on the molecular genetic and pathologic studies of anal cancers using moecular inversion probe genomic technology

Our research interests are primarily in surgical oncology, especially gastrointestinal cancers. We are also developing new research studies in surgical outcomes.

Our laboratory studies the role of cellular stress pathways in the response to injury, particularly wound healing and fracture healing. We also collaborate with laboratories in the School of Engineering to develop new clinical treatments for wound healing.

My goal is to extend the benefits of organ transplant to greater numbers of patients while maintaining Stanford's excellent outcomes. We have set up a protocol to treat morbidly obese patients, who normally would not qualify for kidney transplant, with bariatric surgery prior to kidney transplantation. We are also developing the "paired-organ exchange" program at Stanford to increase the chances that patients with willing but incompatible living donors can still receive a living donor kidney.

My laboratory is interested in molecular mechanisms of visceral pain, disordered gastrointestinal motility and restoration of enteric neural function with novel strategies including neural stem cell transplants and the translation of these efforts to patients in my clinic. I am interested in the effects of new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies on medical decision making, patient outcomes, and cost. Current projects include the CLEVER trial, comparing treatments for intermittent claudication; effect of new IVC filter technology on DVT management; and the role of percutaneous intervention in the management of AV fistula maturation.

I am interested in thrombosis and the role of thrombin and its receptor in venous wall remodeling following venous thrombosis. I am also interested in vascular hemodynamics and the use of ultrasound, MRI and computational modeling in evaluating arterial flow in exercise conditions.

Dr. Lee is the Principal Investigator on several clinical trials examining new therapeutic strategies for management of cerebrovascular disease, claudication and limb salvage, renovascular hypertension and aortic aneurysm disease. Dr. Mell's research interest focus on comparative effectiveness of health care delivery for complex surgical diseases, including optimizing outcomes and cost effectiveness. Dr. Mell's clinical interests include all aspects of vascular surgery, with a special emphasis on surgery for complex aortic disease, including endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Hemodynamic factors in atherosclerosis, pathogenesis of, aortic aneurysms, carotid plaque localization and complication, anastomotic intimal hyperplasia, vascular biology of artery wall, computational fluid dynamics as applied to blood flow and vascular disease.

Dr. Zhou’s vascular research laboratory focuses on molecular mechanisms of and treatment strategies for intimal hyperplasia. Her specific clinical research interests are re-stenosis following endovascular interventions and outcome measures following carotid interventions. Through collaboration with Stanford investigators and investigators at Baylor College of Medicine, plaque morphology and radiographic imaging are correlated.
