Research InterestSensorineural hearing loss affects more than 30 million people worldwide and the most common underlying pathology is loss of sensory hair cells, the mechanoreceptors of the inner ear. Loss of these specialized cells is permanent in mammals and regeneration is limited/non-existent. Recently stem cell-like cells have been isolated from the mammalian inner ears. Our research group is interested in identifying signals that maintain the stem cell population and the stem cell niche in the mammal..

Research Interest1. Evidence-based medicine in Facial Plastic Surgery The primary goal of this research program is to develop a higher standard of care for facial plastic surgery patients. One example of this is the evelopment of prospective studies that examine the efficacy of new or existing surgical techniques in facial plastic surgery. One clinical problem we have already begun to examine is nasal obstruction. 2. Examination of facial nerve injury and biological correlates of functional recovery.

Research InterestKari Nadeau, MD, PhD, Allergy, Immunology and Asthma Our research interests in the laboratory focus on the role of human T cells, specifically natural regulatory T cells (Treg, in immunological diseases. We aim to differentiate the mechanisms of action of regulatory T cell suppressive function. We study how pollution, such as diesel exhause, disrupt Treg suppressive function and how chemokines, like lymphotactin, enhance Treg suppressive function. We also study Treg function in tolerance.
