  • Description:  He has also traveled far from his ivory tower to participate in short-term (2-4 week) medical missions to under-developed countries of the world. On these adventures he has provided anesthesia for life-changing plastic/reconstructive surgery for the poor. Some excursions have been entirely educational. He has been on almost 36 trips to various Central/South American countries, Africa, and Southeast Asia. His most recent trips were to India and Venezuela. These experiences are a poignant connection with the rest of the real world. He has been associated with various organizations (Rotaplast, Mercy Ships, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Resurge, Albanian Health Fund, etc). He has devoted a total of 1.6 yrs on overseas missions. A documentary (Children of Light) was produced of his experience with a small team providing surgery for children in Guatemala suffering from Xeroderma pigmentosum.
