Scientific Focus

Current Research and Scholarly Interests

Our laboratory focuses on developing and utilizing mathematical models and statistics to understand how to improve chronic disease prevention policies in both the United States and abroad. Our laboratory is part of Stanford’s Prevention Research Center—a division of the Department of Medicine that focuses on community-based chronic disease prevention through field-based randomized controlled trials, collaborative implementation of disease prevention programs in the community, and analysis of existing prevention initiatives. Our work, as part of this group, focuses on both substantive and methodological research questions. Substantively, we use mathematical models and statistical methods to analyze large-scale data revealing which chronic disease prevention programs are most effective, among whom, and why. Methodologically, we construct and validate new types of modeling and data analysis approaches that incorporate complex demographic, economic and social science data to improve public health policy responses to disease risks that arise from epidemiological changes among low-income populations.
