(Palo Alto, Calif.)  February 15, 2007 - The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) today awarded Stanford Hospital & Clinics the prestigious Magnet designation for excellence in nursing practices and quality patient care. The Magnet Recognition Program is awarded by the ANCC and is accepted nationally as the gold standard in nursing excellence.

To earn Magnet status, an organization must apply to the ANCC and undergo a rigorous evaluation. Stanford Hospital & Clinics is one of ten hospitals in California to earn Magnet distinction, and only one of two in the state awarded the distinction so far this year. Across the nation, only 3 percent of hospitals have earned this honor.

"The Magnet Recognition Program application process involved a rigorous review of Stanford Hospital's commitment to implementing the Magnet standards," said Cindy Day, Chief Nursing Officer for Stanford Hospital & Clinics. "A team of professionals with expertise in evaluating nursing care and administration reviewed extensive documentation and spent three days on site evaluating nursing practices, the work environment, and resources for patient care," continued Day. "We are proud of the Stanford nurses. It is an honor to be recognized as providing the very best in nursing care."

Magnet LogoHospitals that are awarded Magnet status:

  • Consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining quality nurses
  • Demonstrate increased quality in patient care and patient satisfaction
  • Experience lower mortality rates and shorter lengths of stay among patients
  • Inspire more confidence in the overall quality of care among healthcare consumers

Stanford Hospital & Clinics is known worldwide for advanced patient care provided by its physicians and staff, particularly for the treatment of rare, complex disorders in areas such as cardiac care, cancer treatment, neurosciences, surgery, and organ transplants.

Stanford Hospital & Clinics is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of "America's Best Hospitals" and currently ranks 13th in the nation.
