About the Future Stanford Hospital Project

Stanford Hospital & Clinics is building a visionary hospital that will accommodate advances in medical technology, increase capacity needs, meet new seismic safety requirements and transform the way that patient care is delivered. The Future Stanford Hospital Project includes the construction of a new, seven-story, 824,000-square-foot hospital building, including 368 additional patient beds for a total of 600 beds onsite, an enlarged Level 1 Trauma Center and Emergency Department, as well as new surgical, diagnostic and treatment rooms.

In addition, existing facilities will be renovated and upgraded to provide the most advanced patient experience and fully integrate the new building with existing facilities.

The project was approved unanimously by the Palo Alto City Council on June 6, 2011. Site preparations for the new facility began November 2012 and construction of the building broke ground on May 1, 2013. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2017 with the new building opening to the public in 2018. To learn more, visit
