THE PROJECT

What is the Future Stanford Hospital Project?
Stanford Hospital & Clinics is renovating and expanding its facilities to accommodate new medical technology, increase capacity needs, and meet seismic-safety requirements. The Future Stanford Hospital Project includes the construction of a new 820,000 square foot hospital building, featuring private patient rooms, an enlarged Level-1 trauma center and Emergency Department, as well as new surgical, diagnostic and treatment rooms. The project also includes the renovation of the existing hospital building to modernize existing patient rooms and facilities.

What are some of the features of the Future Stanford Hospital Project?
The Future Stanford Hospital Project includes the construction of a new 820,000 square foot hospital building, featuring private patient rooms, an enlarged Level-1 trauma center and Emergency Department, as well as new surgical, diagnostic and treatment rooms. A pedestrian bridge and underground tunnel will connect the two buildings creating one, interconnected Stanford Hospital campus. The new building will include a light-filled lobby atrium, welcoming public and outdoor spaces and modular pavilions that offer extensive views of the foothills.

When will construction be completed?
Construction of the new building will be completed in 2017 and will open to the public in 2018.

Is the existing hospital building being replaced?
No, the existing hospital building at 300 Pasteur Drive will remain intact. Portions of the building will undergo renovations to modernize and upgrade the existing patient rooms and facilities including the Boswell Clinics and the patient rooms. The new hospital building will be built next to the existing facilities.  

Will the existing hospital remain open during this time?
Stanford Hospital & Clinics will remain open and fully operational throughout construction and renovations.

CONSTRUCTION

When did construction on the Future Stanford Hospital Project begin?
The project was approved unanimously by the Palo Alto City Council on June 6, 2011. On November 1, 2012, work began to prepare the site for construction of the new hospital building, including the demolition of the patient parking structure and 1101 Welch buildings. Work will continue through 2018.

What are the general hours of construction?
Regular construction hours will be between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Weekend, night and holiday work by special permission only. The general contractors will also limit construction material deliveries from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on weekdays in order to reduce the amount of cars on the road. The contractors will also limit the number of construction employees arriving between the hours of 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM or departing construction sites between the hours of 4:30 PM and 6:00PM. All construction related equipment and materials must be transported on roadways designated as truck routes by the City of Menlo Park, City of Palo Alto and Stanford University.

Where is the new hospital building being constructed?
The new hospital building will be built adjacent to the existing hospital building, at the footprint of the old visitor and patient parking structure and the 1101 Welch property.

Will the Stanford Hospital Garden Entrance reopen?
Yes, the Garden Entrance will reopen upon completion the new hospital building and renovated facilities in 2018.

PARKING

Where should I park if I am visiting the Main Hospital or Boswell Clinic (300 Pasteur Dr.)?
Patients visiting the Main Hospital or Boswell Clinic should park in the Pasteur Visitor Garage, the underground parking garage on Pasteur Drive. Use the directions to Stanford Hospital.

Where is the new patient parking garage?
The new patient parking garage, called the Pasteur Visitor Garage, is an underground parking structure. The entrance to the garage is on Pasteur Drive just past Welch Road as you approach the hospital. The ramp down to the garage is the first driveway on your left after you cross Welch Road as you approach the hospital.  
Valet parking at the Fountain Entrance is also available to patients and visitors going to the Main Hospital or Boswell Clinic for the same price as the Pasteur Visitor Garage.

Where should park is I am visiting the Cancer Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center (both 875 Blake Wilbur Dr.) or Blake Wilbur Clinic (900 Blake Wilbur Dr.)?
Patients visiting the Blake Wilbur Clinic, AMC, Cancer Center or Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) should use the valet parking in front of the AMC (875 Blake Wilbur Dr.). For patient convenience during construction, this is a valet-only location. Valet rates are the same as self-park rates at the Pasteur Visitor Garage. Credit cards are accepted at this valet location.

How much does parking cost?
Visitor parking is free for the first hour and $6 for the next 6 hours ($12 max per day). These rates apply to self-park and valet parking options. For more information on parking rates, visit the Stanford Hospital Maps & Directions page.

TRAFFIC ROUTES

How do I get to the Cancer Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center (both 875 Blake Wilbur Dr.) or Blake Wilbur Clinic (900 Blake Wilbur Dr.) during construction?
A detour is in place for patients visiting the Cancer Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center or Blake Wilbur Clinic. Welch Road should be used from Quarry Road only at this time. Note: GPS may not provide accurate directions at this time and visitors should use the Cancer Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center or Blake Wilbur Clinic driving directions listed on our Maps & Directions page.
Welch Road continues to be a one-way, one-lane road from Quarry Road towards Pasteur Drive until summer 2013 when it will return to a two-way, two-lane road.

How do I get to Stanford Hospital or Boswell Clinics (300 Pasteur Dr.) during construction?
Patients visiting Stanford Hospital or Boswell Clinics can continue to access the main hospital from Pasteur Drive. Follow the Main Hospital driving directions for recommended parking and drop-off locations near the hospital entrance.

TRAM SERVICE

What if I need to transportation assistance throughout the Medical Center?
Patients and visitors who need transportation assistance between the Main Hospital, Pasteur Visitor Garage, and Blake Wilbur Drive should utilize the free Tram Service. Any Guest Services staff or Parking Attendant can assist, or you may call Tram Services at (650) 498-3333. Additionally, pedestrian routes are available through the Main Hospital and to the Cancer Center or along Welch Road.

Can I take alternative transportation to Stanford Hospital & Clinics?
Yes. Public transportation around Stanford University Medical Center and areas of Palo Alto is free to the public by taking the Stanford Marguerite Shuttle. For information on shuttle stop locations and schedules, please visit transportation.stanford.edu.

What if I am running late to my appointment?
Please allow additional time to reach your appointment during this time. If you are running late to your appointment for any reason, call the clinic you are visiting.
