Stanford is often referred to as “the Farm” in keeping with its history and location on land donated by its founders, Jane and Leland Stanford. The more than 8,000-acre Palo Alto Stock Farm was given in the grant establishing the University, which opened in 1891. The Farm was the site of Eadweard Muybridge’s famed photographs of “horses in motion,” which proved California Governor Stanford’s theory that a trotter horse, at its fastest gait, momentarily has all four feet off the ground. The renovated historic Red Barn stands today as a treasured reminder of the spirit of innovation that is our heritage.
