Intern Responsibilities
- Provide health and training forms, including:
- TB test that will be current for entire internship
- MMR vaccinations
- Know if you have had chicken pox or vaccination for chicken pox
- Immunization for influenza is strongly recommended
- American Heart Association CPR certification for Healthcare Providers
- Disclose any conditions which would make you unable to perform at the entry-level in this setting for your profession (please check with clinical educator if you have any questions
- Background check
- Discuss learning styles and preferences with your clinical instructor. Work with your clinical instructor to make them aware of issues as early as possible. Contact the clinical educator coordinator, if needed, to work out problems or concerns.
- Assist the clinical instructor in the development and revision of goals and plans for the affiliation based on your personal needs.
- Provide open communication to the clinical instructor regarding needs/problems.
- Provide positive and constructive feedback on the clinic’s educational program and the clinical instructor’s teaching and supervisory skills.
- Participate in the clinical visits from the academic program’s faculty.
- Become a contributing part of the department, at meetings and in-services.
- Independently seek information or training to improve evaluation and treatment skills, and evidence for practice.
- Be aware of health and safety precautions, including response to fire and disasters. Report any safety concerns at once. Use universal precautions and personal protective equipment, when indicated.
- Participate in formal evaluation sessions at the mid-term and at the end of the affiliation:
- Complete and discuss the interim and mid-term evaluations
- Complete and discuss the post-affiliation evaluation
- Complete a self-assessment at mid-term and final
- Complete the school’s questionnaire regarding the fieldwork site
- Report all personal accidents or injuries to the clinical instructor, clinical education coordinator, and academic program as soon as possible. Examples of things that need to be reported:
- intern fainting-report to CI, CEC and school
- exposure to communicable diseases-report to CI and CEC
- Report all patient occurrences to the clinical instructor, lead therapist and CEC as soon as possible.
Supervision
The clinical instructor, either the primary CI assigned to the intern, or a temporary CI, MUST be on site any time a student is treating patients.
- Contact the CEC or resource therapist if your CI is ill or out of the hospital and you are not sure who your preceptor will be for the day.
- All documentation regarding patient care, including documentation of treatment, correspondence and consents, must be co-signed by a supervising therapist who is present on the day of treatment.
- Medicare “B” patients-students may only treat patients with a clinical instructor present and observing/assisting with the entire session.
