Goal

To gain a basic understanding of oncologic therapeutics and expertise in the overall management of patients with malignancies

Objectives

  • Gain knowledge of the principles and techniques of cancer prevention and screening
  • Become familiar with signs and symptoms of common cancers and their treatments
  • Become familiar with cancer chemotherapies including stability, compatibility, side effects, dosing, and response rates
  • Outline appropriate supportive care strategies for pain management, nutrition, nausea and vomiting, and infection prevention and treatment for cancer patients
  • Understand and discuss treatment of oncologic emergencies
  • Gain understanding of the principles of terminal and hospice care, as well as associated medical and ethical issues
  • Become familiar with oncology information sources and current literature

Activities

  • Participate in daily rounds with the oncology team
  • Daily patient monitoring to ensure efficacy and safety of drug therapy
  • Provide accurate and concise drug information to other healthcare professionals
  • Provide patient education on medication
