Life Flight
Life Flight is Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) air ambulance medical service. Our state of the art medical helicopters are expertly staffed by specially trained teams that extend our renowned quality of care and rigorous standards to communities in northern and central California.
We have three helipads and accept patient transports from other air ambulance providers.

Five things we want you to know about Life Flight
- Life Flight is not just for SHC transports! Hospitals may request Life Flight air ambulance to assist in any transport. The patient does not have to be transported to Stanford. We provide transfers to and from facilities in our service area
- Life Flight air ambulance has a range as far as 250 miles (e.g., to the northern California coast, Reno, Bakersfield and the central coast at Santa Maria). If your request is outside of our service area, we can arrange for alternate patient transport to SHC.
- Life Flight air ambulance is a Stanford Hospital-based program within an academic medical center:
- Flight RNs receive continuing SHC education and advanced training
- Specializes in high acuity complex patients
- Documented clinical protocols
- Safety standards and monitoring
- Doctor medical direction
- Life Flight RNs undergo specialty training, enabling them to perform advanced practice procedures that include:
- Rapid sequence intubation
- Needle and surgical cricothyrotomy
- Central intravenous line placement
- Care for patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pump assistance
- Life Flight crews support the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital’s specialty transport teams for obstetrical, and neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit transfers.
