What is a Level 1 Trauma Center?
Stanford is the only designated Level I Trauma Center on the Peninsula between San Francisco and San Jose. We are honored to be a verified Level 1 Trauma Center, which is the highest ranking possible for a trauma center, by the prestigious American College of Surgeons. This means that patients brought here after a serious injury have immediate access to trauma surgeons, operating rooms, and highly skilled specialists.

A Level 1 Trauma Center provides access to:
- Trauma surgeons and emergency medicine doctors who are always in the hospital

- Pediatric surgeons 24 hours a day
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for the special needs of children with serious illness or injury
- Operating rooms equipped and ready at all times
- In-hospital anesthesiologists
We provide leadership and total care for every aspect of traumatic injury from prevention through rehabilitation. In addition to acute care responsibilities, Stanford Hospital provides leadership in education, research and trauma system planning.
Our program is carefully regulated to maintain very high standards of care. Our team regularly participates in advanced training and detailed case analysis to ensure continued skills development and outstanding patient care.

7 days a week, 24 hours
Our air ambulance service, Life Flight, may be dispatched to assist in patient transport. We also accept patient transfers from other air ambulance providers.
The Emergency Department is the point of entry to Stanford Hospital for nearly all trauma patients.
