Specialty Clinics
Insomnia
The Insomnia and Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic helps people who suffer from insomnia and other sleep disorders. Non-pharmacological treatments are available for: adults with insomnia, adults with difficulty acclimating to CPAP therapy for sleep apnea, infants, children, and adolescents with difficulty falling or staying asleep, adults and children with recurrent nightmares. The program is staffed by Dr. Rachel Manber and Dr. Allison Siebern both clinical psychologists who specialize in behavioral sleep medicine.
Narcolepsy
The Narcolepsy Clinic at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic occurs one day a month. World’s narcolepsy expert, Dr. Emmanuel Mignot sees patients with diagnosed narcolepsy, presumed narcolepsy or other disorders of excessive sleepiness. Narcolepsy can be difficult to treat and is both under diagnosed as well as over diagnosed. Our patients travel from all over the world to seek his expert care. The Director of the Stanford Sleep Disorders Division and Director of the Stanford Center for Narcolepsy for over 17 years, Dr. Mignot and his research group are responsible for most of the major discoveries understanding the cause of narcolepsy.
Parasomnia
The Parasomnia Clinic at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic evaluates a wide variety of complex behaviors which arise during the sleep period. The most common are "Disorders of Arousal" (confusional arousals, sleepwalking, and sleep terrors), the "Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Disorder" (characterized by "acting out of dreams"), and "Nocturnal Seizures". This clinic is staffed by Dr. Mark Mahowald who has a longstanding interest in these behaviors.
Restless Legs Syndrome
The RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome) clinic sees patients once a month on Mondays. Typically seen in this specialty clinic are the more severe RLS cases for patients who have failed traditional therapy and come to this clinic as their last chance for relief from unrelenting RLS symptoms. Many of these patients have seen several specialists prior to making an appointment at our clinic. The vast majority of these patients find relief after a few visits to our RLS clinic and we welcome referrals for these RLS sufferers who have been deemed “treatment failures” and who have given up hope that they will ever find a treatment for their RLS. The clinic is staffed by Dr. Mark Buchfuhrer.
