Lung Transplant
At Stanford, over 400 people" have undergone a lung transplant and over 200 patients have received a heart-lung transplant.
Approximately 50-60 patients receive a lung or heart-lung transplant each year. Transplant is performed in newborns to adults over the age of 60.
Innovations, which have been introduced in the lung transplant field from Stanford, include:
- The world's first successful heart-lung transplantation procedure in 1981
- The first use of a living related donor for lung transplantation
- New methods for preserving the lung prior to transplantation and for detecting and treating rejection
The lung transplant team is comprised of medical pulmonologists, surgeons, nurse coordinators, nurse practitioners, specialized social workers, transplant dietitian, transplant pharmacist and intensive-care nurses experienced in both lung and heart transplantation.
