Stanford Hospital’s Liver Transplant Program began in 1991 as part of the Multi-Organ Transplant Program. Since then, our team has performed more than 800 adult liver transplantations, consistently exceeding national patient and liver survival rates at the one- and three-year marks after transplantation.*
The liver transplant program at Stanford is directed by Dr. Carlos Esquivel and Dr. Aijaz Ahmed. The transplant team includes a full range of clinicians to ensure that you get the best, most thorough care possible.
Our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to providing you with specialized care that addresses the many different aspects of liver disease. From evaluation through post-operative care, we are focused on your individual needs and transplant success. Our team includes transplant surgeons, transplant hepatologists, nurse coordinators, patient care coordinators, financial coordinators, an independent donor advocate, transplant social workers, pharmacists, and nutritionists.
We now offer outreach clinics in nine Northern California locations to make it easier for patients to access our transplant program and comprehensive liver disease care that includes hepatology, hepatobiliary surgery, liver cancer treatment, transplantation, and interventional radiology.
