Approaching Weight Loss from Every Angle

Obesity is a complex disease, with numerous causes, and no single answer to weight loss. At the Bariatric and Metabolic Interdisciplinary Clinic (BMI Clinic), we also realize that no two people are alike. So we work with you to create an individualized plan that fits you and your life. That may mean developing a weight loss plan based on either surgical or non-surgical methods, or is designed to lose a half a pound per week instead of one to two pounds per week.

Regardless of what treatment plan we work with you to develop, remember that losing weight slowly will be more effective and healthy over the long term because quick weight loss often spurs weight regain.

Treating Obesity

Your Stanford team will determine specific treatment for obesity based on:

  • your age, overall health and medical history
  • extent of overweight or obesity
  • your tolerance for specific medications, procedures or therapies
  • expectations for the course of the condition
  • your opinion or preference

There are a variety of methods we use to treat obesity, and your plan may include a combination of treatment types. Incorporating multiple methods, such as making diet changes as well as adding exercise, may be more effective.
