The Neuropsychology Service provides assessment and diagnosis of the cognitive and behavioral effects of neurologic disorders. These disorders include head injury, cerebrovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, brain tumor, parkinsons and epilepsy as well as learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. We provide services to adolescents and adults, both as inpatients and outpatients. A typical assessment involves administration of neuropsychological and psychological tests, record review, and an interview with the patient (including, if available, a friend or family member).
Reasons for referral may include:
- To determine the presence, nature, and severity of cognitive dysfunction
- To provide diagnostic information needed prior to neurosurgical procedures
- To provide baseline information for longitudinal follow-up
- To determine cognitive capacity for work, school, and independent living
- To identify psychological factors such as depression that contribute to cognitive dysfunction
- To provide treatment recommendations for cognitive disorders and psychological adjustment
- To facilitate and help direct rehabilitation
Written and verbal feedback is tailored to the needs of the patient and referral source. Physicians and others may make referrals.
Specialty Clinics
In addition to general neuropsychological services, the neuropsychological program has two specialty clinics designed to provide services to specific referral groups. These are:
Stanford Memory Clinic
The Memory Clinic at Stanford provides a consultation service to physicians, which includes diagnosis, treatment, and guidance for adults who have problems with memory. Memory disorders can result from a number of medical conditions such as brain trauma, epilepsy, stroke, dementia, brain tumor, multiple sclerosis, encephalitis, and exposure to neurotoxins. Depression, chronic pain, certain medications and high levels of stress can also contribute to reduced memory. Increased forgetfulness due to aging is a worry to many people who may benefit from the reassurance provided by a formal evaluation. Occupational Neuropsychology Program
The Occupational Neuropsychology Program is intended to provide neuropsychological assessment and related services when a neurological disorder may have affected an employee's capacity to perform job duties adequately. Services include assessment, feedback as appropriate, and guidance in obtaining interventions. Situations appropriate for referral include the need for a return-to-work evaluation and employee requests for on-the-job accommodation.
