Neuromuscular Program
The Neuromuscular Program at Stanford Hospital & Clinics provides comprehensive assessment for the diagnosis and care of common and rare neuromuscular disorders. Clinical neuromuscular evaluations are combined with sophisticated testing, including autonomic, genetic, electrophysiological, imaging, biopsy and serological tests, not available in most neurology clinics.
Our specialists are nationally recognized experts in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders, and are actively investigating neuromuscular disorders to find new, more effective treatments.
The Neuromuscular Program offers:
- Sophisticated diagnostic testing, and interpretation of results by experienced neuromuscular clinicians
- Neurologists, neuropathologists and geneticists with extensive experience in developing personalized treatment plans
- Family-based care for hereditary neuromuscular conditions, treating multiple generations with a seamless transition from childhood to adult care
- Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) designated clinic with an on-site coordinator to help patients access support services
Team Approach
The Neuromuscular Program provides an integrated team to deliver patient-focused care. Our approach focuses not only on identifying and controlling the neuromuscular disease, but on meeting each individual's lifelong needs at home, work and school.
During clinic visits, patients meet with all of the appropriate neuromuscular specialists, including a neurologist, physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists, a clinical social worker, a genetic counselor, a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant, a research assistant, a community liaison and other providers.
Neuromuscular Research
Our groundbreaking investigations assure patients acess to neuromuscular clinical trials that:
- Identify genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying nerve and muscle disorders
- Improve understanding and control of inflammatory and immune-mediated nerve and muscle disorders
- Create and validate new drug, protein and genetic treatments of inherited nerve and muscle disorders
- Explore new treatments using stem cells or other emerging technologies
