Neuromuscular Disorders

Our neuromuscular specialists provide clinical consultation, counseling, diagnosis and management of a wide range of neuromuscular disorders that include genetic, immunologic, metabolic, toxic, degenerative diseases of the nerves, muscles and neuromuscular junction.

Where applicable, a multidisciplinary team is available to provide physical and occupational therapy and augmentative communication. We also work closely with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to offer services to those patients with diseases covered by MDA.

Diagnosis

Stanford provides the following diagnostic services used to diagnosis some neuromuscular disorders:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Electrodiagnostic studies
  • Autonomic function testing
  • Nerve, muscle and skin biopsy
  • Genetic testing

All of these tests are supervised and interpreted by Stanford specialists to ensure optimal utilization and accurate diagnosis.

Treatment

We provide state-of-the-art treatment for a wide range of disorders. Our center is experienced in the medical and surgical treatments of many serious neuromuscular disorders including:

  • Immunologic therapy
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Administration of intravenous immunoglobulin

In addition, ongoing clinical trials explore the possibility of cutting edge therapies.
