Stanford Neurocritical Care Program

The Stanford Neurocritical Care service provides unparalleled care for patients with critical neurologic illnesses at Stanford Hospital & Clinics. Our neurocritical specialists are all fellowship-trained in neurocritical care and provide advanced diagnostics, neuroimaging, multimodality monitoring and comprehensive treatment plans.

Certification as the nationís first Comprehensive Stroke Center and recertification as a Level 1 Trauma Center, the highest ranking for trauma centers in the United States, recognizes the neurocritical care team's broad expertise. These certifications acknowledge comprehensive, quality care for complex, life-threatening neurological illnesses.

Our multispecialty neurocritical care team’s expertise and experience allows Stanford to offer:

  • Pioneering Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and CT neuroimaging techniques
  • Advanced neuromonitoring capabilities including EEGs, brain tissue perfusion monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, cerebral oxygenation monitoring, and quantitative automated pupillometry
  • A hybrid suite where diagnostic imaging, neurosurgical operations and interventional procedures can all be performed, reducing the need to move critically-ill patients
  • Consultation for intensive care unit patients at other hospitals with primary neurological illnesses or neurologic complications of systemic illnesses

Neurocritical Care Team
The neurocritical team provides 24-hour coverage of the Neurocritical Care unit, the Emergency Room and other inpatient hospital units, caring for patients with primary neurologic illness, neurological complications of systemic illness and neurological emergencies. Team members also have training in neurovascular disease and cover acute stroke cases and inpatient stroke care.

Advancing Neurocritical Care
Our patients have access to leading-edge diagnostic and therapeutic research trials, developed by one of the nation’s top neurocritical care research teams and funded by organizations like the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. The teams also contribute to national care guidelines in neurocritical care.
