Surgical Treatments
Patients with Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor and Dystonia may be candidates for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
Physicians within our Functional Neurosurgery Program have performed more than two hundred DBS procedures since deep brain stimulation surgery was first performed here in 1999. Our team-based approach utilizes precise intra-operative targeting for stimulation, as well as identifying structures to avoid. This technique optimizes our patients' clinical outcomes.
What is Deep Brain Stimulation?
Deep brain stimulation, also known as DBS, uses a surgically implanted medical device, similar to a cardiac pacemaker, to deliver carefully controlled electrical stimulation to targeted areas within the brain. View more information about deep brain stimulation.
Surgical Evaluation
Patients undergoing a surgical evaluation will be seen by our neurologist, Dr. Helen Bronte-Stewart, our neurosurgeon, Dr. Jaimie Henderson and our neuropsychologist, Dr. Simon Tan. They will also need to have a pre-operative MRI.
Once all these evaluations are complete, the patient's case will be presented at a movement disorders board meeting and a decision will be made regarding acceptance for deep brain stimulation surgery.
Surgery is recommended only after this thorough evaluation and only for patients who will significantly benefit.
