Medical Treatments

Patients may be referred for evaluation and treatment of many conditions " including:

Patient care begins with an in-depth evaluation and consultation by Dr. Helen Bronte-Stewart, a movement disorders specialist with more than 15 years experience.

Along with an office visit, patients may undergo testing in our Stanford Human Motor Control and Balance Laboratory.  This laboratory utilizes computerized measurements of movement to help physicians accurately diagnose movement disorders and customize therapy for patients.

Another assessment tool we use is neuropsychological testing, where a neuropsychologist administers a comprehensive battery of tests to patients that is designed to assess the functioning of different aspects of the brain " including memory, reasoning and language fluency. These tests help identify any cognitive or psychological issues that may be influencing a patient's quality of life. We also offer referrals to psychiatrists with special expertise in working with patients with Parkinson's Disease.  These referrals may be on a one-time basis or for ongoing treatment.

Medical treatment may include initial diagnosis and/or recommendations regarding medication regimens for Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremor and dystonia. Along with oral medications, we also offer Botox (botulinum toxin therapy) for patients with blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, dystonia, tremor and/or spasticity. Patients will be referred into the Botulinum toxin clinic if such therapy is indicated.
