Introduction to the Headache Program

Welcome to Stanford’s Headache clinic. You are here because you are having difficulty with headache or other pain in your head or neck. We are here to help you identify and understand the cause of your pain and to help you manage it as well as possible. The key to our (and your) success will be effective communication. We will do everything we can to remain available and responsive to you while you are under our care. In return, we ask that you follow our treatment plan and keep us informed of any changes in your health, medications or lifestyle. The better we understand your pain and the impact it has on your life, the better we are able to help you improve your condition.

Pre-Visit Headache History

Our program begins well before your first visit. When you call the clinic to make an appointment, you will be asked to complete a detailed headache history. This is necessary because we review and plan your first visit based on information provided in the history. It is a good idea to have a list of medicines you are currently taking and those you have taken in the past available to you when you complete the questionnaire. If you do not have a list do the best you can.

Please print and return the completed form to us either in person or via mail at least one week prior to your first appointment. Failure to do so may result in cancellation or rescheduling of your appointment.

Your first appointment

Your first visit to the clinic can up to three hours long. At the conclusion of your visit, you will be given:

  • A written treatment plan including further testing, imaging and evaluation
  • Recommendations for what to do when you are experiencing pain
  • A list of medications you are taking and why as well as what their potential side effects might be
  • Recommended lifestyle changes that may improve your situation. Please note that some of the lifestyle changes (e.g. biofeedback, yoga, etc…) many not be covered by your insurance plans
  • Clear instructions for how and when to contact us between appointments
