Patients must be referred to the Stanford Comprehensive Epilepsy Center clinic by a physician who is familiar with their case.
At the Stanford clinic, physicians and nurses specialists provide a full evaluation of patients with epilepsy, seizure disorders, and conditions that might comprise seizures, such as unexplained loss of consciousness or confusion episodes. Staff of the clinic will review previous records and test results such as blood tests, EEG, MRI (which may be sent in advance or brought at the time of visit), and perform a neurological history and physical examination relevant to the diagnosis of seizures. Because Stanford is a medical school, evaluation typically involves students and advance trainees, but always under the direction of the attending physician. An opinion on diagnosis and possible treatments will be provided to the patient and to the referring physician. Occasionally, additional tests will be recommended, to be obtained at Stanford or elsewhere. Follow-up visits at Stanford may be recommended in some instances.
