The Heart Center at Stanford Hospital & Clinics provides the full range of services for adults with cardiovascular diseases including:

Patients and referring physicians have access to the broadest possible range of treatments, allowing the best choice for individual needs based on the most up-to-date therapies available.

Surgeons at Stanford, led by Dr. Norman Shumway, were the first to perform a human heart transplant in the United States, and have done more than 1,000 of them to date. This pioneering work has been followed by expanded research and practice in all aspects of cardiac care including noninvasive diagnostic and surgical techniques.

At the Falk Center for Cardiovascular Research and the Donald W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center, clinicians and researchers are pushing the boundaries of knowledge regarding diagnosis and treatment, as well as basic research.

Stanford medical professionals remain dedicated to humanizing treatment, and all members of the clinical team work together to assure patients of the most personalized service possible during what can be a difficult time. In addition to services that include emotional counseling and help with travel, Stanford has developed a model case management program to smooth the patient's path through complex treatments.

As individuals become more involved in their own care, they realize that quality varies among health care institutions. The success of bypass surgery, transplants, and other highly technical procedures relates directly to the experience of the physicians and hospital. Centers performing a high volume of procedures, like Stanford, experience better outcomes. Indeed, U.S. News and World Report has ranked Stanford's cardiovascular services as the best in the western United States since it began its annual ranking of the country's best hospitals.

As health care evolves, Stanford continues to be a benchmark in the delivery of patient-centered care and embraces the challenges that a consumer-oriented health care structure will demand.
